    Truth in the Emendation

    Get PDF
Spinoza’s claims about true ideas are central to the Treatise on the Emendation of the Intellect. It is therefore worth trying to reconstruct what he means when he says that an idea is true. I argue that the three leading interpretations – correspondence, coherence, and causal – don’t explain key passages. I then propose a new interpretation. Roughly, I propose that an idea is true if and only if it represents an essence and was derived in the right kind of way by the intellect from an innate idea of one’s own essence. In the final section I sketch why I believe this interpretation extends to his claims about truth and adequacy in the Ethics

Thomas Torrance\u27s Reformulation of Karl Barth\u27s Christological Rejection of Natural Theology

    Get PDF
Karl Barth is widely noted for his antipathy to all forms of natural theology. Indeed, the results of Barth’s Christocentricity have made his name synonymous with the negation of all divine revelation apart from Christ, the one Word of God. if this is so, then the theology of Thomas Torrance, as a highly significant development of Barth’s thought and as vitally concerned with proper natural theology (in dialogue with the physical sciences), becomes a questionable enterprise. This article examines this question and concludes that, while Torrance clearly goes beyond Barth, he is faithful to subthemes in Barth’s theology relating to ‘natural theology’, making explicit and bringing to prominence streams of Barthian thought often left unnoticed

Dimilin for Control of Lernaea in Golden Shiner Ponds

    Get PDF
A single application of Oimilin (UNIROYAL),diflubenzuron, was tested in 9 (nine) ponds containing golden shiner minnows, Notemigonus crysoleucas, infested with the parasitic copepod Lernaea cyprinacea. The chemical was applied at a rate of1 0 or 30 pg/l and compared to untreated controls. Fish were periodically sampled to determine levels of infestation, and zooplankton numbers were monitored for chemical effect. Oimilin treatment significantly reduced (P \u3c 0.05) parasite infestation four to eight days after treatment. No significant difference (P \u3c 0.05) was noted between the two levels of treatment. Zooplankton populations decreased in the Dimilin treated ponds following chemical application. Rotifer populations rebounded later during the period, but copepod populations in the ponds treated with 30 ng/L remained depressed from two days after treatment for one month until the study ended. Complete parasite control was not obtained with either chemical concentration using a single application. These results suggest that a single treatment is not effective for Lernaea control. Future research will test two applications 10 days apart at the 10 and 30 /xg/L levels

The impact of pupil behaviour and wellbeing on educational outcomes

    Get PDF
A review of previous literature suggests that wellbeing and learning are associated with one another; however, there is less information on how multiple dimensions of wellbeing together predict later changes in educational outcomes for children and teenagers. The simultaneous examination of different dimensions of wellbeing across primary and secondary school will help clarify their relative importance during the key stages of schooling. This project examines how various dimensions of children’s wellbeing are associated with their educational outcomes, including a review of relevant literature and an analysis using data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC)

Post-metamorphic fluid infiltration into granulites from the Adirondack Mountains, USA

    Get PDF
Post-metamorphic effects in the anorthosites of the Adirondacks, New York were described. Calcite-chlorite-sericite assemblages occur as veins, in disseminated form and as clots, and document retrograde fluid infiltration. These features are associated with late-state CO2-rich fluid inclusions. Stable isotope analyses of calcites indicates that the retrograde fluids interacted with meta-igneous and supracrustal lithologies, but the precise timing of the retrogression is as yet unknown

Primitive hepatic venous plexus in a child with scimitar syndrome and pulmonary sequestration

This article reports a case of scimitar syndrome with pulmonary sequestration, persistent primitive hepatic venous plexus and stenosis of the inferior vena cava in a child presenting with failure to thrive. Such associations are rare but may have implications when planning interventions for patients with complex congenital heart diseasepeer-reviewe
